In an age of noise, what we have is a refreshingly quiet entry.
Debut singles are made to make a statement. New artists come out with big plans, heavy marketing and tracks designed for instant impact. The logic is sound. Afrobeats is very much a competitive space in Africa and standing out is a challenge.
Temz4sure’s debut single, Give Me Flowers, takes a different path.
Instead of hitting us over the head with spectacle the record goes into sincerity. It is a track more about connection than attention, which puts forward an artist that seems to be rooted in emotional truth rather than commercial drama.
That choice immediately sets this release apart from many of its peers.
Produced by Nigerian producer DrachX the song benefits from a great degree of restraint which has become a rare quality in today’s modern pop. The production doesn’t try to dominate the listener. Instead it creates a soft and welcoming base which Temz4sure is able to work with.
DrachX is due great credit here.
A lesser producer may have gone over the top in working with a debut artist. Instead DrachX shows an understanding of the song’s emotional needs. The instrumentals support rather than intrude, the core message of the record remains intact.
That balance is not easy to achieve.
Great production is often in the background. We may feel the emotion of a song without being aware of the decisions behind it. In Give Me Flowers the production is always in service of the song, each element supports and never distracts.
Temz4sure rises to that environment well.
Her performance has a level of vulnerability that is real. There is no attempt to copy star performers or present a grand persona. Instead she sounds at home in the emotion the song is presenting.
That authenticity is one of the single’s best features.
The title of the track also works on many levels. “Give Me Flowers” can be taken literally but also as a broad term for praise, attention and emotional support. This song’s appeal lies in part in its open endedness, in that it allows listeners to put their own experiences into it.
Musically the track is very accessible yet not predictable.
The melody is memorable, the arrangement is cohesive and the pacing is very considered. These traits may not bring in viral success but what is put forward is very valuable – replayability. Give Me Flowers is the type of song that gets better the more you hear.
There are of course points where the track reveals itself as a debut release.
While the emotional intent is clear at times the lyricism leaves room for more detail. Also some audiences may wish for a more distinct musical identity. The song does well in its sincerity, but that alone is not enough to create identity. As Temz4sure continues to grow she will need to develop a more instantly recognizable artistry.
But also these are more as opportunities.
The point of a debut single is not perfection. It is to pique interest.
By that measure Give Me Flowers does very well.
The record introduces a vocalist with a clear feel for emotion, a producer that supports that vision and a creative team that looks very promising. More so it leaves the audience wanting more.
In a music business obsessed with first impressions Temz4sure’s debut does what many fail to do.
It gains attention without demanding it.
And at times that is the best introduction an artist can make.
