Wife of Edo State Governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki has expressed disappointment at Mrs. Tina Okhiria’s decision to change her testimony in court and discontinue the case instituted against her husband for shooting her in the hand.

The shooting had resulted in the amputation of the hand of the housewife.

Following the incident, the Mrs Obaseki had spearheaded a case of gender-based violence to protect her right and to ensure the husband gets appropriate punishment for his action.

The Edo First Lady was, however, shocked and disappointed when she learned that Mrs. Okhiria had sworn affidavit to discontinue with the case, stating that her husband’s actions were not intentional.

At a meeting at the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, Mrs Obaseki emphasized the gravity of gender-based violence, labeling it a crime against the state, and asserted that the government had already taken up the case and would not back down.

She also issued a strong warning to Mrs. Okhiria, asserting that any attempt to withdraw charges would result in her being added to the legal proceedings under the compounding felony clause.

She delivered a stern warning to friends, relatives, and victims of gender-based violence, cautioning against attempt to pervert justice in cases of assault, noting that the provision within the VAPP Law, could lead to both Mrs. Okhiria and her husband serving jail time.

The First Lady stressed that the government’s responsibility was to ensure a safe society for all citizens.

Highlighting the disheartening nature of Mrs. Okhiria’s actions, Obaseki underscored the tragic stories of women who had lost their lives due to domestic abuse. She pointed out the importance of speaking up and seeking justice in such cases.

Despite the challenges posed by the nature of the amputation, Obaseki revealed ongoing efforts to provide Mrs. Okhiria with the best electronic prosthesis globally, highlighting the significant costs involved.

The First Lady’s resolute stance reaffirms the government’s dedication to addressing gender-based violence and ensuring justice prevails.
