The wife of Edo State Governor, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has emphasized the need for competent and enlightened women to actively participate in politics.
Mrs Obaseki who made the call during a meeting with members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), at the Exco Chambers of the State Government House, urged them to vie for elective positions to drive progress in Nigeria.
The First Lady stressed the importance of capable women taking up roles in the political arena, emphasizing that their involvement is crucial for the realization of the nation’s goals and the advancement of the rights of women and children.
This is even as she commended FIDA for its long-standing commitment to providing pro bono services, particularly in addressing issues related to gender-based violence.
She urged the organization to maintain excellence in selecting its leadership, citing it as a key factor in its enduring strength over the years.
Earlier in her speech, the National President of FIDA Nigeria, Mrs. Amina Agbaje Esq., expressed gratitude to the Edo First Lady, acknowledging her dedicated efforts in combatting gender-based violence in Edo State.
Mrs Agbaje applauded Mrs Obaseki’s initiatives, including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, the Vivian Centre (Sexual Assault Referral Centre), and the Daisy Danjuma Women Shelter for victims of gender-based violence.
Mrs. Obaseki was presented with an award in recognition of her outstanding support for women and children by FIDA Nigeria.
