Every year we see thousands of young Nigerians leave behind what they know best, familiar streets, family routines, and old friends, in search of what they hope will be better opportunities abroad. Their journeys play out in terms of visas, flight tickets, and social media updates. What is left out of the picture are the quieter truths, which follow, of living in a foreign climate, hearing different accents, coming home to empty rooms, missing the bus, and the slow process of building a new life from the ground up.

These are the stuff which forms the emotional core of Mima Szn’s latest single, New Weather. Released independently in October 2023, the record is a thoughtful look at migration and personal change. Mima Szn doesn’t present relocation as a success story to be celebrated, instead, she looks at the uncertainty, the loneliness, and the resilience that come with big life changes.

From the very first notes, the song has a very personal feel. The image of “two suitcases and a carry-on” immediately puts the listener in the narrator’s shoes as she leaves home. What follows is not a tale of instant achievement but a realistic account of adjustment, learning new routes, missing familiar voices, and finding confidence in the unfamiliar. In an age where migration stories are reduced to headlines and statistics, this record stands out for its focus on the human detail.

The lyrics avoid grandiose statements. Instead, they zero in on what many immigrants recognize immediately: calling home way too much, putting on a front that you’re doing better than you are, and finding comfort in small routines during hard times. This honesty gives the song an authenticity that feels earned.

Musically, Mima Szn moves between melodic songwriting and conversational rap. The approach allows her to tell a story without losing the emotional connection. Backed by warm instrumentation and understated production from Yendrick, the record has a cinematic quality without becoming overproduced.

One of the song’s greatest strengths is its refusal to present growth as a sudden breakthrough. The repeated refrain of “one step, then another” reflects a more realistic view of personal development. Progress comes slowly through adaptation, patience, and persistence.

The accompanying artwork also plays into this theme. Mima Szn is presented between identities and environments, visually representing the transition explored in the record. The image captures a feeling very much familiar to many who have relocated: existing between who you were and who you are becoming.

The song is not without its flaws. Its reflective nature means some may wish for more musical variation across its run time. The production, which prioritises mood and storytelling over immediate excitement at times, causes the track to feel more intimate than expansive. Also, certain sections could do with stronger melodic development to create a more memorable climax.

But these are secondary to the song’s main purpose. New Weather is not trying to be a club hit or a viral sensation. It is a personal document, a musical journal, which brings to light issues which are often ignored in mainstream Afrobeats. In doing so, Mima Szn shows a willingness to explore subjects which are still very much underrepresented in contemporary Nigerian music.

Perhaps the record’s greatest achievement is its optimism. While it does not shy away from loneliness, uncertainty, and cultural adjustment, it ultimately chooses not to dwell on the negative. Instead, it puts forth the idea that growth happens quietly, often before it is visible. For many listeners going through similar transitions, this message may prove very meaningful.

With New Weather, Mima Szn gives more than a song about relocation. She gives a thought out portrait of reinvention, which reminds us that changing environments do not mean leaving who we are behind. Sometimes, as the song suggests, it just means learning to thrive in new weather.
