Chelsea have officially parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca, bringing an end to his 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge following a breakdown in relations and a worrying run of results.

The Premier League club confirmed the decision in a statement on New Year’s Day, saying both parties agreed that a change was necessary to get the season back on track.

“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company,” the statement read.

“While Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, both the club and the coach believe a change gives the team the best chance of achieving its objectives for the remainder of the season.”

Maresca exits with Chelsea sitting fifth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, after winning just one of their last seven league matches.

Behind the scenes, relations between the Italian coach and key figures at the club had reportedly deteriorated, with Sky Sports revealing that Chelsea chiefs questioned Maresca’s “mental fortitude and emotional maturity.”

The club was also unhappy with his public comments, strained relationship with the medical team, and reports linking him to other top European clubs, including Manchester City and Juventus.

It is understood that Maresca felt his position had become untenable, even as Chelsea were already considering his dismissal due to poor performances and internal disagreements.

Despite lifting the Club World Cup and Conference League trophies, Chelsea believe recent results and off-field issues outweighed those achievements.

The Blues are now expected to announce a replacement within days, with Strasbourg coach Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading candidate. Chelsea are unlikely to pursue names such as Oliver Glasner, Cesc Fabregas, Roberto De Zerbi or Andoni Iraola.
