Chelsea begin talks for new manager as Alonso, Iraola lead race

Quick Read

Chelsea have started speaking with possible candidates for the club’s permanent manager position after sacking Liam Rosenior.

Chelsea have started speaking with possible candidates for the club’s permanent manager position after sacking Liam Rosenior.

According to reports from the BBC, former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola are currently the leading contenders for the job.

Chelsea officials reportedly see Alonso as one of the strongest options because of his coaching experience and successful time at Bayer Leverkusen. Despite his short and disappointing spell at Real Madrid earlier this year, the club still believes he has the quality needed to manage at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports reports that Chelsea consider Alonso to have the best managerial profile among the candidates being considered, thanks to both his coaching achievements and his successful playing career.

The Athletic also reports that Chelsea are interested in appointing Alonso, who is said to be open to returning to management after being dismissed by Real Madrid in January, only seven months after replacing Carlo Ancelotti.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth coach Iraola is also being strongly considered after announcing he will leave the club when his contract ends this season.

Other managers reportedly on Chelsea’s shortlist include Marco Silva and Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Former Chelsea players Cesc Fàbregas and Filipe Luís are also admired within the club.

Chelsea hope to appoint a new manager before pre-season starts in July, although the club is currently focused on the FA Cup final while discussions continue behind the scenes.
