Sunderland pulled off a stunning upset at Stamford Bridge, beating Chelsea 2-1 after a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Chemsdine Talbi sealed all three points for the visitors.

It was a result few saw coming, one that lifts Sunderland to second in the Premier League table with five wins from their opening nine games. The Black Cats showed courage, composure, and a tactical masterclass to overcome Enzo Maresca’s youthful Chelsea side, who once again paid the price for missed chances.

Chelsea had taken an early lead through Alejandro Garnacho, who finished off a quick counter-attack in the first half. But Sunderland refused to back down, finding an equaliser before the break when Wilson Isidor punished the hosts’ slack defending.

At half-time, the score was level at 1-1, and Sunderland’s resilience only grew stronger. BBC reporter Chris Wise noted their composure:

“They’ve shown self-belief to respond to Garnacho’s goal. Chelsea have made them absorb pressure, but Sunderland are limiting Maresca’s men to half-chances.”

Chelsea came close to retaking the lead when Moises Caicedo’s fierce strike from distance was tipped over by Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs, who also made key saves to deny Garnacho and Marc Guiu.

Sunderland’s full-backs, Trai Hume and Bertrand Traore, did an excellent job containing Chelsea’s wide threats
