Chelsea’s disastrous campaign hit a new height on Tuesday night as Brighton & Hove Albion dismantled the London side in a 3–0 thrashing at the Amex Stadium.
In a performance devoid of tactical cohesion or clinical finishing, the Blues were thoroughly outclassed by Fabian Hurzeler’s side, leaving interim manager Liam Rosenior with more questions than answers as the Premier League season enters its final stretch.
The tone was set just three minutes into the match. Robert Sanchez, returning to his former home, initially produced a stunning reflex save to deny Kaoru Mitoma, but the Chelsea defence remained stagnant. Ferdi Kadioglu reacted first to the rebound, rifling a low drive into the heart of the net to give the Seagulls an early lead they would never relinquish.
Chelsea struggled to find any rhythm throughout the first half, failing to register a single shot on goal in the opening 25 minutes.
While Pedro Neto tried to spark life into the attack via set pieces, the Brighton defence, led by Jan Paul van Hecke, remained resolute. The frustration for the visitors was epitomized by Wesley Fofana, who earned a yellow card just before the break for a cynical jersey pull, a moment that signaled the end of his night as he was replaced by Alejandro Garnacho at halftime.
The second half offered no respite for the traveling supporters. In the 56th minute, Jack Hinshelwood doubled the advantage with a moment of pure technical quality, latching onto a pass and curling a precise strike into the bottom left corner from the edge of the area.
Chelsea attempted a late surge with the introductions of Marc Guiu and Dario Essugo, and Garnacho came agonizingly close in the 77th minute with a curling effort that whistled just wide of the post.
However, the final blow was delivered in stoppage time by veteran striker Danny Welbeck. Showing the composure that Chelsea’s young frontline lacked, Welbeck connected with a first-time shot inside the box to fire into the roof of the net, making it 3–0 and sending the home crowd into raptures.
