World Cup: Salah scores controversial goal as Egypt beat New Zealand

Quick Read

Egypt, however, grew into the contest and finally drew level in the second half through Mostafa Ziko, who found the breakthrough in the 58th minute after sustained pressure from the North Africans.

Mohamed Salah scored in controversial circumstances as Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 and claim a historic World Cup victory in their Group G clash.

New Zealand had taken an early lead through defender Finn Surman, who rose highest to power home a header and put the All Whites in front.

Egypt, however, grew into the contest and finally drew level in the second half through Mostafa Ziko, who found the breakthrough in the 58th minute after sustained pressure from the North Africans.

The major talking point of the match came shortly after New Zealand introduced Ben Old in attack. The forward had only just replaced Callum McCowatt when he suffered a wardrobe malfunction following a challenge near the Egypt penalty area.

Old was forced to leave the pitch to change his shorts after a large tear appeared in his kit, leaving New Zealand temporarily down to 10 men.

Egypt took advantage of the extra space almost immediately, with Salah bursting into the box before firing a low effort into the bottom corner to put his side ahead.

The goal sparked controversy among New Zealand players and supporters, who felt the All Whites were placed at a disadvantage while Old was still off the pitch.

Egypt made the result safe when Trezeguet struck late on, turning home a third goal to seal a memorable win.

The victory lifted Egypt to the top of Group G on four points, ahead of Belgium and Iran, who have two points each. New Zealand remain in danger with just one point.

Egypt will now go into their final group match knowing that a draw against Iran could be enough to secure a place in the knockout stage.
