Quick Read

Manchester City have not commented on the compensation agreement. Maresca is expected to be officially introduced later this week, with his first competitive match set to be the Community Shield clash against Arsenal.

Enzo Maresca has officially become Manchester City’s new head coach, but his move comes with a financial cost. The Italian manager will have to pay compensation to Chelsea after leaving the club earlier this year.

Maresca, 46, signed a three-year contract to replace Pep Guardiola, who stepped down in May after a highly successful 10-year spell at Manchester City.

The announcement of Maresca’s appointment was delayed because Manchester City and Chelsea were discussing compensation following his departure from Stamford Bridge.

Maresca left Chelsea in January after a poor run of results, with the team winning only one of their last seven Premier League matches. At the time, Chelsea said both sides had agreed that a change was needed to improve the team’s performances.

However, Maresca has now revealed that he resigned from his position, a decision that later allowed him to pursue the Manchester City job.

Chelsea described his departure as a decision to stop carrying out his duties and confirmed that an agreement had been reached for Maresca to compensate the club. The exact amount has not been made public.

After guiding Leicester City to promotion in the 2023/24 season, Maresca joined Chelsea with high expectations but spent less than eight months in charge before leaving.

He now takes over at Manchester City and faces the challenge of succeeding Guardiola while dealing with the aftermath of his departure from Chelsea.

Manchester City have not commented on the compensation agreement. Maresca is expected to be officially introduced later this week, with his first competitive match set to be the Community Shield clash against Arsenal.
