Sports Philanthropist Donates Jerseys
The 2011 Abesan Cup, which is scheduled to kick off next month in Lagos and Ogun States, has received a boost from a sports philanthropist, Segun Akinyele, who donated four sets of Jerseys to the organisers.
Presenting the jerseys to the Abesan Football Development, Akinyele said the gesture is to empower the Nigerian youths through sports. He said he was moved by the impressive record of the organisers since they started organising the tourney.
He promised to donate a trophy for the Under 13 version of the tournament to be tagged Eskom Cup.
“Sport is one of the ways to check youth unrest in the country and nothing should be spared towards achieving peace in the country. Those with physical attributes can contribute to national development through Sports,†he said.
Coordinator of the Abesan Football Development, Tayo Adeyemo, commended the donor for identifying with the body. He appealed to other well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to emulate Segun Akinyele by supporting the association.
Adeyemo disclosed that the four sets of jerseys will be presented to the four semi-finalists duirng the competition.
“Nineteen teams have so far registered for the tournament and more teams will confirm their participation before the end of the month,†he said.
